Joel Heng (b. 1988) is a Director of Photography based in Singapore. After his GCE ‘O’ Levels, he pursued an internship with a television production company. He then spent 13 years in the ranks of the technical crew before shooting his first television commercial.

In 2016, he was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Apollo Awards, for his work on Eysham Ali’s TRAPPED MINDS (2016). Joel has also lensed LIMITED EDITION (2019), A GIRLBAND CALLED GIRLBAND (2019), AFTER LOVE (2019) and short films such as Thong Kay Wee’s HIDDEN FOLK (2013), Sufyan Sam’an’s RAYQAL (2018) and most recently Gavin Lim’s THE LAST SONG (2020), starring Andie Chen.

A rebel at heart- Joel continues to question narrative conventions, coupled with his innate curiosity and his hands-on approach to problem solving. He brings to the table a knack for practical boundary pushing that remains a driving force in his search for emotional truth in his images.

“There are voices I remember,

Ones that whispered in the mornings, till the still of moonlight

Ones burning and raging to be heard,

Ones that stayed silent to listen soberly,

Ones that sang of golden yesterdays,

And mine, that will speak the beauty and truth of their tomorrows.”
